SONGBOOK AMERICA

Nice show this week (as always J ) on SONGBOOK AMERICA. The Dave Pell Octet have that West Coast swingin’ harmony; Tierney Sutton sings “Something Cool”; there’s a ”Peanut Vendor” with Hugo Winterhalter; a Yma Sumac hit with her four-octave range voice (remember her in the 50’s?). Martha Tilton and Benny Goodman go back a way. The Gene Harris Super Band and Joe Williams with Super Sax from LA; Carmen McRae, Tommy Flanagan. Sinatra, The Freshmen, Bobby Darin and Stan Getz with Joao Gilberto. Good stuff! Listen right here and you can certainly email the show: russ@bostonpete.com Thanks for listening. =Russ Butler

Western Music Time Radio Program

There’s lots of variety on the show this week, from a set saluting some of the big band era’s finest Western recordings, songs that became hit records, to a set of requests for 3 songs recorded between 1964 & 1998. There are some brand new releases of long-lost recordings you’re sure to enjoy, a salute to the late Les Paul, who passed away in August (Les was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ford, many years ago, but he remained active musically into his 90s), and songs from new Sons of the Pioneers, Roy Rogers & Rex Allen re-issues. You’ll hear some gems you may not have heard in a long, long time, so be sure to “set a spell” and enjoy the show!

Bluegrass Time Radio Show

This week’s show opens with a novelty tune you aren’t likely to forget, followed by one of Jimmy Martin’s big sellers. There are songs from the masters (Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs and Reno & Smiley) and some of the best of the post-60s groups as well. We’ll also return to the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and we’ll answer a request for songs that tell stories of the Civil War. There’s some great Bluegrass gospel, a classic or two and a few that may soon become favorites if you haven’t heard them before, so pull up a straight-back chair, lean back on two legs (not too far!) and enjoy the music!

SONGBOOK AMERICA

Sinatra sings a Cole Porter tune that Cole wrote on a bet. In 1944. a friend bet him that he couldn’t write a song with the title “I Love You” - he did, he won and you’ll hear it here. Claude Thornhill says “Adios”, Ella and Gordon Jenkins perform “I Wished On The Moon”, Jerry Vale sings “Moonlight Becomes You” and in keeping with looking up at the heavens, Sy Zetner’s Big Band do “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows” Much more on the show, one hour of great stuff!
