“The UFO Incident” is based on the true-life story of Betty and Barney Hill (played by Estelle Parsons and James Earl Jones), an interracial couple from Portsmouth, NH, who were driving home from Canada on the night of September 19, 1961 when they were allegedly abducted by extraterrestrials. This made-for-TV movie depicts the events of that evening as remembered independently by the Hills while under the hypnotic trance of Dr. Benjamin Simon, and is told largely in flashback sequences.

Although the incident did not become public knowledge until 1966, the Hills sought the help of Dr. Benjamin Simon after being crippled by anxiety and nightmares. They hope that hypnotic therapy will help them fill in a gap in their memories that lasted for some two hours and thirty-five road miles. Barney becomes particularly resistant to this treatment because he fears that the memories will cause a stroke, a medical condition to which his family is predisposed.

This program was originally broadcast on NBC on October 20, 1975.
