| Bob Hope and Lucille Ball co-starred in four full-length films (Sorrowful Jones, Fancy Pants, The Facts of Life and Critics’ Choice) and appeared in over two dozen television shows together. Over the course of their lengthy Hollywood careers, they developed a sincere friendship. Bob once referred to Lucy as “my funniest leading lady” and he even did her the favor of anointing her husband (Desi Arnaz) as the musical director for his radio show for the 1946-47 season.
In March 1989 the two of them served as presenters for the Academy Awards; a little more than a month later, on April 26, Lucille Ball passed away. This show, which aired on NBC on September 23, 1989 was Bob’s final tribute to her. The four guest stars – George Burns, Danny Thomas, Kirk Cameron and Betty White – share anecdotes about how Lucy influenced their lives and careers, but their presence is almost incidental; the show consists largely of clips from past television shows and movies where Bob and Lucy regularly crossed paths. |
