| | Kill The Umpire (1950): Former baseball player Bill Johnson spends his days watching baseball games, which eventually costs him more than one job. He reluctantly takes the advice of his father-in-law, Jonah Evans, a retired umpire, to harness his love of the game and enter an umpire-training school (against the wishes of his wife). At first he tries to sabotage his own efforts, believing that the umpire is the lowest form of life on earth. Jimmy O’Brien, the school director eventually convinces him to take it seriously and he becomes "Two-Call" Johnson. Assigned to the Texas League, he does fine until the championship play-offs when a riot develops over one of his calls. The involved player is knocked unconscious in the proceedings and cannot verify that Bill made the correct call. Despite lynch mob plans to at least tar-and-feather him, Bill's family helps Bill reach the ballpark safely the next day through a series of hair-raising encounters. 78 minutes. |
