To celebrate what would have been Bob Wills' 100th birthday, VCI has issued a special 2-DVD set that traces his history. A 57 min. video with the same title was issued in 1994, but this new, enhanced set runs over 4 hours! Executive producer John Wooley introduces the DVD, which is set in the famous Cain's Ballroom where Bob Wills first appeared in 1934. Red Steagall narrates, and traces the history of Bob Wills' music with interviews, film clips, photo stills and telescriptions.
On the first disc, Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel talks about the music and the Wheel performs some classic Western swing, and the legendary Eldon Shamblin and Johnny Gimble tell stories about what it was like to work with Bob Wills. Tracy Byrd sings Red Steagall's "Lone Star Beer & Bob Wills Music" and talks about how he introduces young fans to Western swing. And we see a Warner Bros. one-reeler from 1944 featuring Bob Wills & his Texas Playboys, plus a clip from Russell Hayden's B-Western film, The Last Horseman, where Bob & the boys do "OK Oklahoma."
This is followed by a series of Snader telescriptions featuring Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys: Carolina Cotton sings "Yodel Mountain" & "Three Miles South of Cash in Arkansas," Joe Frank Ferguson sings "Blue Prelude" and Bob does "Sittin' on top of the World." There are versions of "Ida Red" from 2 different eras, we hear the "Texas Playboy Theme" and more. And there are 2 in-depth interviews with Bob's brother Luke Wills and sister Lorene.
Disc two contains a full concert from Cain's in 1994, beginning with fiddler Jody Nix and his Texas Cowboys, including Randy Elmore on fiddle. Their set opens for The Texas Playboys who reprise numerous Bob Wills hits. The band, hosted by Truitt Cunningham, is a veritable "Who's Who of Western swing," including guitarist Eldon Shamblin, twin fiddlers Bobby Boatright & Curly Lewis, steel guitarist Bobby Koefer, Clarence Cagle, Casey Dickens, Glenn Rhees, Joe Frank Ferguson and Luke Wills! Some of the older musicians featured here have now retired or passed away, so this concert/dance performance is a special treasure. The disc ends with most of these same musicians seated around a table in the ballroom, talking at length about old times when they worked with Bob &/or Johnny Lee Wills. A "must" for anyone who's even remotely interested in the history of Bob Wills' music or who enjoys Western swing.
