5 out of 5 stars5 out of 5 stars5 out of 5 stars5 out of 5 stars5 out of 5 stars Two of Tex Ritter's best films on one DVD, 6/3/2006
Reviewer: O.J. Sikes (Leonia, NJ)

VCI Entertainment has issued two superb Tex Ritter films on this one DVD-R. Song of the Gringo ( from1936)was Tex's first film and for that reason alone is a treasure, but that's not the only reason. It contains some great music, "Chiquita," "Out on the Lone Prairie" & "Sam Hall" (Tex loved history, so traditional cowboy tunes were an important part of his repertoire from the start). The second film, Rollin' Plains (1938) was, in my opinion, one of his best. In it, Tex's sidekicks are Snub Pollard & Horace Murphy. Murphy palyed a character called "Ananias" in Tex's films, and a few years later, was to becomy "Shorty" on Gene Autry's Melody Ranch radio show. You may also recognize Hank Worden, who made numerous movies with Tex and, later with John Wayne and others. Hank & Tex were close friends when they worked in NY together before moving to Hollywood. The music includes "Me & My Pal, My Pony" and "Rollin' Plains," neither of which Tex recorded. In fact, he only recorded one of the songs he sang in Song of the Gringo, too, making this DVD even more interesting to fans of Western music. The Beverly Hillbillies make a guest appearance in Rollin' Plains, where they sing "Nancy Till." This DVD is playable in all regions and the image quality is quite good in both instances, welcome news for Tex Ritter fans who have a tough time locating good quality prints. Highly recommended!
