5 out of 5 stars5 out of 5 stars5 out of 5 stars5 out of 5 stars5 out of 5 stars Vintage Tex, Great music!, 2/12/2006
Reviewer: O.J. Sikes (Leonia, NJ)

I've looked for years for decent quality prints of the old Tex Ritter films on video. I've even bought some on DVD, but until VCI started releasing their DVDs, I'd only been able to find old, washed out prints. Now, with this new series, I can actually see the movies! You may see an occasional streak, like those we used to see when we sat in the front row on Saturday afternoons, but these are tv quality prints. This new double feature on one disc, opens with Tex's 3rd film, Arizona Days, released by Grand National in 1937. Syd Saylor and Eleanor Stewart co-star with Tex. It was Saylor's second (and last) appearance as Tex's sidekick. And Glenn Strange is one of the bad guys, long before he was to become Sam, the bartender on Gunsmoke. Salty Holmes, who was a member of The Prairie Ramblers, also appears, and plays a novelty harmonica solo, "The Fox Chase." Tex sings some vintage songs, two of which he recorded, "Arizona Days" (one of my favorites from Tex's early years) and "High, Wide & Handsome." A third good one, "Tombstone, Arizona," was never recorded, as far as I know. But that's just one more reason to add this DVD to your collection. You won't hear it anywhere else! There are copies of this film around on video, but you won't find one in better condition than this one. The same applies to the second feature, Arizona Trail, filmed at Universal Studios in 1943. Fuzzy Knight is Tex's sidekick in this one, and Dennis Moore plays a leading role as well. The highlight of this film is the musical appearance of Johnny Bond & his Red River Valley Boys, one of whom is Wesley Tuttle. They appeared in a number of films, and it's always a real treat to see them. But this is one of their best. They sing my favorite Johnny Bond composition, "Stars of the Midnight Ranges," and another that has become a standard, "Ridin' Down to Santa Fe," both of which feature wonderful yodeling by Wes Tuttle. Tex sings a great song,"Stay Away from My Heart," composed by Frankie Marvin's brother Johnny. He didn't record it until years later, and then only as a transcription. I like the film rendition better than the recording! And there's good close-up photography, so you can see who' s singing! There are a couple of other musical interludes, but these are the cream of the crop. Highly recommended!
