They Called Him The Galloping Prairie Lawyer... Because he was full of two-fisted advice!
Bob Baker the Singing Cowboy in two solid westerns, SINGING OUTLAW and BORDER WOLVES.
Bob Baker the Singing Cowboy in two solid westerns! In the first, SINGING OUTLAW, Cowboy Bob Baker witnesses a gundown involving a singing cowpoke and a U.S. Marshal. When the Marshal is killed Baker takes over his identity and finds himself in all types of dilemmas. In the second feature, BORDER WOLVES, an outlaw gang attacks a covered wagon and a young Rusty Reynolds (Bob Baker) is accused of the crime. Rusty vows to track down the real culprits. Like all of Bob's westerns, these two feature lots of good music and song.

When Ranger Doug was doing the research for his book, Singing in the Saddle, he told me he was impressed with the almost forgotten singing cowboy star Bob Baker. Baker's films have been around on video, but not always easy to find and often in poor condition. However, VCI Entertainment has found good, clear (tv quality) prints of two of Bob Baker's films and they are now available as a "double feature" on one DVD-R.
The first film, Singing Outlaw, features plenty of music composed by Fleming Allen, Atze Taconis & Homer Gayne. Baker's sidekick is Fuzzy Knight, but it's Bob who does the singing. Bob comes upon the scene of the murder of a U.S. marshal by a singing bandit, and assumes the marshal's identity in an attempt to solve the mystery. But the plan backfires, the plot thickens, and following it will really keep you on your toes. In an unusual twist, Fuzzy unravels the mystery while Bob captures the outlaws.
In the second film, Border Wolves, the music is composed by Taconis & Gayne. Both films' music was arranged & conduced by Frank Sanucci, whose work appeared in so many early Westerns starring Tex Ritter and others. Fuzzy Knight is Bob's sidekick again, and this time, Fuzzy gets to do a couple of songs ("Bow-legged Bill" as a solo, and he introduces "Wyoming Moon"). Young Dickie Jones (soon to become the voice of Disney's Pinocchio and later, tv's Buffalo Bill, Jr.) also appears. In the film, Bob and Fuzzy are accused of ambushing a covered wagon and sentenced to hang, but...Well, you'll have to see it for yourself. There are a few white flecks in the second feature, but I didn't find them to be disruptive.
A couple of rare, fun, singing cowboy movies you're sure to enjoy, on one DVD at a very low price. After watching these films I can see why Doug was impressed. So was I!
