4 out of 5 stars4 out of 5 stars4 out of 5 stars4 out of 5 stars4 out of 5 stars 2 fine, rare singing cowboy films, 2/12/2006
Reviewer: O.J. Sikes (Leonia, NJ)

Trio Westerns were all the rage in the 1930s & '40s, but not all of them included music. When the very popular Three Mesquiteers series ceased production in the early 40's, that trio's members, Max Terhune & Ray "Crash" Corrigan, were joined by singing cowboy John "Dusty" King to form The Range Busters. The idea seems to have been to build on the immense popularity the Mesquiteers had established a little earlier, and further bolster the films by introducing music, which was also popular with fans. The films included Terhune with Elmer's antics, Corrigan's heroics and competition with King for the leading lady's affection. They made a good team, the films were entertaining, and we got to hear some good singing (King had an excellent voice). Both films in this double feature DVD-R are tv quality prints, clear as a bell. In Saddle Mountain Roundup (1942) the boys find themselves in a spooky murder mystery, but "Dusty" has time to sing a couple of songs he wrote, "The Doggone Dogie Got Away" & "That Little Green Valley of Mine." Cousin Herald Goodman, Rudy Sooter and their small bunkhouse band perform "Little Brown Jug." In Wrangler's Roost (1942), the boys are faced with the challenge of finding a mysterious bandit who carries an empty gun. And here, too, there's time for a couple of "Dusty" King's renditions of songs that may have been written specifically for this film, the title song and "Joggin." The movies were filmed at the Ray Corrigan Ranch and George Cheseboro plays the bad guy. He's one you'll remember as soon as you see him, if you don't recognize the name. He was one of the best. These are two rare singing cowboy films you're sure to enjoy adding to your own collection.
