Double-barreled action galore in this special double feature starring Tex Ritter and includes "Marshal of Gunsmoke" (1937) and "Oklahoma Raiders" (1944).

Tex Ritter was remembered as much for his music as for his films. He began his movie career in the mid-thirties and as a singing cowboy, he was second only to Gene Autry in popularity. In the first half of the double-bill, "Marshal of Gunsmoke," Ward (Tex Ritter) is a U.S. Marshall going to round up a group of bandits that are attempting to rig the local elections. The second half of the double feature, "Oklahoma Raiders," takes place during the Civil War and Union Army Lieutenant Steve Nolan (Tex Ritter) and Corporal Banjo Bonner (Fuzzy Knight) are assigned to trail and capture "El Vengador/The Avenger", an outlaw leader whose band is stealing herds of wild horses before they can be delivered on contract to the U.S. Army.

5 out of 5 stars5 out of 5 stars5 out of 5 stars5 out of 5 stars5 out of 5 stars Super music in both films!, 3/15/2006
Reviewer: O.J. Sikes (Leonia, NJ)

For years it has seemed almost impossible to find a nice clean print of any of Tex Ritter's movies. Fortunately, these two are in excellent condition. Both are Universal Studios films from early 1944. They are not restored, but are as close as you'll get to the images we watched at Sat.matinees long ago. Both feature Fuzzy Knight as Tex's sidekick, and Johnny Bond & his Red River Valley Boys (Wesley Tuttle, Jimmy Dean & Paul Sells). In Marshal of Gunsmoke, Johnny and the Boys do some great songs, including "Saddle Serenade" with Wes doing the slow yodel. They also back Jennifer Holt on beautiful versions of "La Golondrina/Cielito Lindo" and " Sundown Trail." Tex doesn't sing until halfway through the picture, but then he does a fine rendition of "Git Along Little Dogies." Russell Hayden co-stars in Marshal of Gunsmoke. Hayden, Bond, Tuttle and Ritter worked closely in the mid-forties, when Hayden left his role as "Lucky" Jenkins in the Hopalong Cassidy series to go solo. Hayden got a break when he was asked to replace Tex as the star of one of his films after Tex injured his back in a fall. Dennis Moore co-stars with Tex in Oklahoma Raiders. The story takes place during the Civil War and Fuzzy opens it with a period piece, "Nelly Bly." Tex sings "Trail to Mexico." Johnny and the Boys sing "Out on the Open Range," which is particularly interesting because on their transcription, it's done as an instrumental. Here we even get to hear some trio harmony yodeling! Later, they back Tex on "Cowboy's Dream" 'round the campfire. On this one, Wes supplies the slow yodel and Tex harmonizes with the Boys, taking the bass line! And they close the show with an abbreviated "Starlight on the Prairie." Super music in both films, and since it's a double feature, you automatically get 'em both!
