Duncan Renaldo becomes THE Cisco Kid, 5/16/2008

Five years before he became The Cisco Kid on TV, Duncan Renaldo first appeared as Cisco on the silver screen. In those films from the 1940s, he had two different sidekicks; first Martin Garralaga, and later, Leo Carrillo, who, as “Pancho,” was a favorite of the TV generation. Recently, VCI Entertainment released a DVD containing three b&w Cisco Kid films from the ‘40s. Two of them, The Cisco Kid Returns and Old New Mexico, both from 1945, were Renaldo’s first two films as Cisco. Both featured Garralaga in the role of Pancho. The 3rd film is Gay Amigo, from 1949, with Leo Carillo as Pancho.
As far as I know, this is the first time Old New Mexico has been released on DVD, and the image quality of both of the ’45 films is excellent. In these films, Cisco wears a black sombrero, sports a small mustache and wears his gun backwards. But by 1949, he was clean-shaven, wore a white sombrero, and Carrillo had taken over the role of Pancho, one he was to be associated with in the minds of viewers for the rest of his career.
The ’49 film paved the way for the popular TV series that began in 1950. It was the first such series to be filmed in color. In fact, color TV didn’t exist at the time! One of the DVD’s bonus features is a beautiful color TV episode from 1952 titled “Mad About Money.” Ken Maynard’s brother, Kermit, plays the sheriff in the episode. You’ll enjoy it!
