Placing historical facts in a fictional framework, STORIES OF THE CENTURY was among the best Western television series of the 1950s, winning an Emmy in 1955 for its efforts. In each episode, railroad detective Matt Clark (veteran television actor Jim Davis) traveled to another part of the Wild West and encountered a different historical figure. Clark found himself face to face with outlaws like Jesse James and Billy the Kid, gunfighters like Doc Holliday, and Native American heroes such as Geronimo and Crazy Horse. STORIES OF THE CENTURY combined educational information about these luminaries while keeping the stories fresh and exciting through the character of Matt Clark. This set contains 36 episodes of the classic Western television show.

5 out of 5 stars5 out of 5 stars5 out of 5 stars5 out of 5 stars5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly entertaining!, 4/26/2006
Reviewer: O.J. Sikes (Leonia, NJ)

This is a far more enjoyable set than I assumed it would be! It stars Jim Davis (remember him as Jock Ewing from the DALLAS tv series? He also played in dozens of Western movies and tv shows). Each episode features Jim as railroad detective Matt Clark who has a role to play in the capture of a legendary Western bandit or notorious character from the pages of history. Filmed in 1954-55, the stories are based on newspaper archives, with Hollywood's addition of Davis and his partner, so you see the story through their eyes. You'll spot faces you know, from before they became famous, e.g. Lee Van Cleef, Fess Parker (just before Disney starred him as Davy Crockett), etc. And each of the 3 discs has an interesting bonus feature on a related topic of Western history. I found the set thoroughly entertaining, even though it's not a musical series! Highly recommended!
