| This massive collection of films celebrating women boasts appearances by such screen legends as Natalie Wood, Sophia Loren, Susan Hayward, and Joan Crawford. Nine classic films made between 1932 and 1971 combine for more than 15 hours of female-driven entertainment.
BECKY SHARP (1935): The first Technicolor feature is a loose adaptation of Thackeray's Vanity Fair. Something of a gold-digger, little orphan Becky sets her cap for Joseph Sedley, the wealthy brother of her best friend Amelia. But even the dull-witted Joseph realizes that his family would not smile upon such a union and so never proposes. Frustrated, Becky leaves the Sedley household, and, using her brains, beauty and charm, claws her way into the upper class. Rather tough going, but worth seeing (particularly the recently restored version) a watershed movie moment. Academy Award Nominations: Best Actress--Miriam Hopkins.
Cast: Miriam Hopkins
Director: Rouben Mamoulian
Producer: Kenneth MacGowan
THE GREEN PROMISE (1949): The whole family pitches in to make their farm a success. The Matthews family–with Walter Brennan as the patriarch–ekes out a living on their farmstead in rural America.
Cast: Natalie Wood, Walter Brennan, Robert Paige, Robert Ellis
RAIN (1932): Joan Crawford, starring as prostitute Sadie Thompson in this adaptation of the Maugham story, is a magnet for all the men on the exotic island of Pago Pago, but fundamentalist preacher Rev. Alfred Davidson (Walter Huston) wants her to see the error of her ways and repent. When, at long last, she begins to come around to his way of thinking, Davidson himself begins to fall for her when the two become stranded together during a fierce tropical storm.
Cast: Joan Crawford, Walter Huston
Director: Lewis Milestone
Producer: Joseph M. Schenck
NURSE EDITH CAVELL (1939): The life of Nurse Cavell and three Belgium women who risk their lives to aid Allied soldiers in their escape from Brussels during World War I. Academy Award Nominations: Best Original Score.
Cast: Anna Neagle
Director: Herbert Wilcox
TWO WOMEN (1960): In Vittorio De Sica's TWO WOMEN, Cesira (Sophia Loren) and her young daughter (Eleonora Brown) leave Rome for the comfort of the Italian hills, hoping to remain safe during WWII. When the Allied troops start moving north, Cesira and her daughter feel secure enough to head back to Rome, but tragedy ensues when they encounter a group of Moroccan soldiers. Sultry Sophia Loren dominates this dark drama in a role that won her an Oscar for Best Actress.
Cast: Raf Vallone, Sophia Loren
Director: Vittorio De Sica
Producer: Carlo Ponti
IF TOMORROW COMES (1971): When one phone call lands a pregnant bride-to-be in jail, she vows to emerge a different woman and go after the people who framed her. A miniseries version of Sidney Sheldon's bestselling novel.
Cast: Madolyn Smith
Director: Jerry London
A popular nightclub singer turns to alcohol when she fails to cope with the myriad emotional problems she suffers from. Susan Hayward stars as Angelica Evans, a singer who is just about to break it big when she falls in love with wanna-be singer Ken Conway (Lee Bowman) and sacrifices her career in order to forward his. As Ken's success skyrockets, the marriage starts to crumble and Angel, as Ken calls her, can't get away from the bottle, eventually jeopardizing the life of her baby. Reminiscent of THE LOST WEEKEND and A STAR IS BORN, Stuart Heisler's melodrama is a sensitive, insightful look at the tragedy of addiction, featuring a fine turn by the steadfast Eddie Albert as Steve, Ken and Angie's best friend and the only one willing to see the truth. Academy Award Nominations: 2, including Best Actress--Susan Hayward, Best Original Story.
