| Rex Allen, the last of the big screen's singing cowboys, stars as Dr. Bill Baxter in Frontier Doctor. A well-known singer, songwriter and radio star, Allen made his first movie, "The Arizona Cowboy" in 1950. Rex went on to appear in more than 30 Westerns, including "Under Mexicali Stars," "Thunder in God's Country," and "The Old Overland Trail." Allen personified the clean cut, American hero of the wild west, who wore a white Stetson and loved his faithful horse Koko, billed as "The Wonder Horse."
10 Classic Episodes:
Queen of the Cimarron (09/26/1958): Dr. Baxter discovers that the cattle that saloon owner Fancy Varden plans to start her cattle empire with are infected with anthrax, and the disease is spreading from the cattle to the cowhands.
San Francisco Story (10/04/1958): While in San Francisco at a medical convention, Dr. Baxter is framed for murder when a man whom he treated for a routine leg injury dies mysteriously.
Mystery of the Black Stallion (11/08/1958): Two Eastern crooks try to run an insurance scam to victimize the owner of a valuable racehorse and fix a major horse race.
The Outlaw Legion (11/15/1958): Lured to a remote cabin, Dr. Baxter discovers the men he's treating for bullet wounds are members of Butch Cassidy's "Hole in the Wall Gang".

The Homesteaders (04/04/1959): A young ranch hand tries to protect his girlfriend and her family of immigrant homesteaders from the attacks of his cowboy friends who want to keep the range open to run their cattle.
Danger Valley (04/11/1959): Sheriff Quinn and his posse search for the man responsible for an express office hold-up, Dr. Bill Baxter tries to find the source of the diphtheria epidemic that's sweeping the valley. Bill soon realizes that he and the Sheriff are searching for the same man.
The Twisted Road (04/25/1959): When two young women are strangled, the townspeople of Rising Springs suspect any and all newcomers of the crimes. The sheriff arrests a man who claims to have recently moved West for his health, but Dr. Baxter becomes convinced that they've arrested the wrong man.
Gringo Pete (05/02/1959): An outlaw leader suffering from a fatal heart disease convinces the territorial governor that he will cooperate with the law to round up his former outlaw gang. Once paroled, he resumes command of his henchman and rustles horses badly need as U.S. Cavalry remounts. Dr. Baxter, who treated the outlaw in prison, devises a plan to recapture the double-crossing criminal.
Flaming Gold (06/20/1959): Returning from a medical convention, Dr. Baxter stops off in an oil-boom town to visit and old patient, but discovers that the lawyer had suddenly died while arguing a case in court. Baxter becomes convinced that the oil companies who were the defendants in the suit murdered the lawyer to force his inexperienced junior partner to handle the case alone.

After Rex Allen made his last B-Western film for Republic Studios in 1954, Republic asked him to do a TV series called Frontier Doctor. It was Rex’s idea, inspired by a book title he found in the library, and he set the series in the early 1900s in southern Arizona, the area where he was born.
The series, launched in 1958, ran for 39 episodes, but it was not a continuation of his role as Rex Allen, singing cowboy. He was Dr. Bill Baxter, and he drove a horse & buggy rather than riding Koko. There was plenty of suspense and action; a very enjoyable ˝ hour show.
This new 2 DVD set contains 10 episodes, only 3 of which have ever been issued on DVD before. The series was filmed in b&w and the image contrast is not as sharp as it is in a VCI Entertainment video of 4 episodes, but there are 10 episodes here, they are all good, and the price “can’t be beat!” Most titles are from early in the season, but one, “Gringo Pete,” comes from near the end. Highly recommended!
