Terror by Night (1946 - B&W): Master sleuth Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) is hired by the wealthy widow Lady Margaret (Mary Forbes) and her son Roland Carstairs (Geoffrey Steele) to prevent the theft of an enormous diamond known as the "Star of Rhodesia." Traveling by train from London to Edinburgh, Holmes guards the priceless jewel with the help of Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) and Inspector Lestrade (Dennis Hoey). But when the diamond disappears and Roland is found murdered, Holmes must deduce the murderer's identity from among the speeding train's many suspicious passengers, including Dr. Watson's old friend Major Duncan-Bleek (Alan Mowbray). Dripping with atmosphere and claustrophobic suspense, TERROR BY NIGHT is a true classic in the pantheon of Sherlock Holmes mysteries.
Cast: Alan Mowbray, Basil Rathbone, Dennis Hoey, Nigel Bruce
Director: Roy William Neill
The Woman in Green (1945 - B&W): When four women are found murdered--each missing their right forefinger--a baffled Scotland Yard calls in master sleuth Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and his faithful cohort Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) to help crack the case. Believing the murders to be the work of a criminal mastermind, Holmes follows the trail to a society of hypnotists and a mysterious, beautiful woman named Lydia Marlow (Hillary Brooke). It isn't long before Holmes discovers a web of hypnosis and blackmail that leads him to his archenemy, the evil Professor Moriarty (Henry Daniell), who lures the detective into a dangerous trance from which he may never awake. Based on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story "The Empty House," THE WOMAN IN GREEN marks the last of the classic Rathbone films to be penned by Holmes regular Bertram Millhauser.
Cast: Basil Rathbone, Henry Daniell, Hillary Brooke, Nigel Bruce, Paul Cavanagh
Director: Roy William Neill
Secret Weapon (1943 - B&W): The secret weapon is a new bombsight which could hasten the outcome of World War II, and both the Allies and the Nazis are in a desperate race to secure it for themselves. Super sleuth Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and his trusty assistant Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) are assigned to find the kidnapped scientist who developed the secret weapon, only to be foiled by Holmes' nemesis, the evil Professor Moriarty (Lionel Atwill). Based on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story THE ADVENTURE OF THE DANCING MEN, this Holmes case transplants the Victorian sleuth into the realm of WWII espionage and is also the first of the films to introduce Dennis Hoey as Scotland Yard detective Inspector Lestrade.
Cast: Basil Rathbone, Dennis Hoey, Lionel Atwill, Nigel Bruce
Director: Roy William Neill
Dresses to Kill (1946 - B&W): A convicted thief in Dartmoor prison hides the location of the stolen Bank of England printing plates inside three music boxes. When the innocent purchasers of the boxes start to be murdered, Holmes and Watson investigate.
Cast: Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Patricia Morison, Edmund Breon, Frederick Worlock, Carl Harbord
Director: Roy William Neill
