| This first volume of episodes from the second season of IRONSIDE features further escapades with wheelchair-bound former detective Robert T. Ironside (Raymond Burr). Rookie sergeant Ed Brown (Don Galloway), policewoman Eve Whitfield (Barbara Anderson), and reformed criminal Mark Sanger (Don Mitchell) aid Ironside as he works as a consultant for the San Francisco police department. In this season, which originally aired in 1968, the gang hunt down a jewel thief, look into the career of a policeman who has been accused of murder, and encounter a chatty Mynah bird who may offer them clues to an unsolved murder.
Shell Game (09/19/1968): A charming thief arrives in San Francisco with murderous plans to steal a priceless jewel collection. Ironside's assignment: to make sure the jewelry is transported into and out of a museum without incident.
Split Second to an Epitaph: Part 1 (09/26/1968): Ironside agrees to undergo exploratory surgery that could restore his ability to walk - or kill him. At that hospital, a masked assailant escapes with stolen drugs after murdering a security guard.
Split Second to an Epitaph: Part 2 (09/26/1968): Just before his spinal surgery, Ironside asks the public to help find the person who stole drugs from the hospital and killed a guard. The chief does not know that the same man has been planning for Ironside to die on the operating table.
The Sacrifice (10/03/1968): Mark's eyewitness account casts suspicion of murder on a veteran police detective. When his alibi is disproved by Ironside, the sergeant stops at nothing to find someone who will confess to the crime.
Robert Phillips vs. the Man (10/10/1968): The police commissioner asks Ironside to prove that an angry young African-American activist did not stab a racist shopkeeper to death during a riot.
Desperate Encounter (10/24/1968): On vacation in the mountains, Ironside tries to find a former hunting buddy. The chief is then kidnapped by a wealthy rancher and his son, who have been plotting to steal the land belonging to Ironside's old friend.
I, the People (10/31/1968): Milton Berle is both guest star and cowriter of this episode, which was clearly inspired by the rantings of provocative TV talkshow host Joe Pyne. Playing completely straight, Berle is cast as vituperative TV personality Ross Howard, who hopes to parlay both his war record and his media notoreity into a political career. Not surprisingly, Howard has made dozens of enemies throughout his career, one of whom begins sending him death threats.
Price Tag: Death (11/07/1968): Ironside (Raymond Burr) heads to San Francisco's Skid Row to solve the murder of a street person. In the course of events, the Chief tries to rehabilitate Rafe (Ralph Meeker), a fiercely proud ex-cop who has become a shabby derelict. Meanwhile, another down-and-outer named Jack (Clu Gulager) confounds the authorities with a trail of forged checks.
