Ritchie Valens's death in the same 1959 airplane crash that claimed Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper remains one of the greatest tragedies of early rock & roll. Valens was only 17 years old at the time, standing at the very beginning of his musical career, full of promise and unrealized potential. His simple, heartfelt music made the teenager America's first Latin rock star, inspired a Hollywood film, and earned him a posthumous induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The adolescent longing and playful, exuberant energy of songs such as "La Bamba", "Donna," and "Come On, Let's Go" have long since made them absolute classics.
