Judy Garland & Friends - Get Happy: Classic Performances (2 CDs)

Of all the female chanteuses and singers of the last century, none is so fondly remembered than Judy Garland. The memory of her fame lingers not only because of her near flawless voice and stage presence but also because she has come to embody both all that was best and all that was worst in twentieth century Hollywood. Originally released for what would have been Garland's 75th birthday by Sid Luft music, this two disc set captures two important and captivating sets of performances. The first disc is a compilation of duets recorded for CBS' weekly 'The Judy Garland Show.' Garland seemingly relishes every note she sings on these recordings and more than holds her own when paired with names as legendary as her own. All the greats are here: Count Basie, Sinatra, Bennet, Streisand, even daughter Liza Minnelli puts in an appearance. The overall effect is breathtaking - particularly her twelve song medley with Bobby Darin. The second disc of this set is also a revelation. Normally a nervous and unpredictable performer in front of an audience, Garland shows no such nerves in this 1952 concert recorded at the Palace Theatre in New York. Blasting through old standards and classics, her performance of 'Over The Rainbow' and 'Liza' were described as 'homeruns' by one critic.
